Playing as Work
Cory Helms, Executive Consultant
When he was just 13, Cory Helms decided he wanted to be a musician. And, unlike
many, he had the talent and determination to make his dream come true, working and
practicing more than 10 hours a day to build a successful career as a guitar instructor
and member of the band Polyphonic Spree. For more than eight years he toured the
world, appearing on TV and at major music festivals.
But this glamorous life came at a price. “Traveling was my day job and being at home
was my vacation,” Cory says. “I wanted some stability and control over my schedule.”
It was about this time that he noticed a musician friend’s Facebook posts about
Ambit. “I approached my friend Paul Jenkins because he seemed laid back but
successful. That made me realize this was something I could do.” Cory followed up by
attending a local meeting in Fort Worth, and soon decided he’d do everything he
could to become a successful Ambit Energy Consultant.
A Crescendo of Progress
At first Cory thought Ambit would be easy. “I thought everyone I knew would join and
we’d all make lots of money. Turns out it doesn’t work that way.” After suffering some
initial rejections, Cory reevaluated his approach. He worked the basics and focused
on building a team of dedicated, hard workers who constantly move the needle
forward. And slowly but surely, his team grew, enabling to fast-track to EC in just 18
“You have to present the Opportunity the right way to each person, whether you think
they’re interested or not. Confidence and patience are key.”
Music to His Ears
On his way to becoming an EC, Cory has enjoyed some great moments. “Getting my
first large commercial property, fast-tracking to EC, walking across the stage at
AMBITION, eliminating debt, and there are more to come.” He’s also developed the
ability to handle objections, communicate and improved his leadership skills, things
that would sound great to anyone.
He advises new Consultants to find a strong mentor, and to not get discouraged when
someone gives you excuses. “I said no and joined a year-and-a-half later,” he says.
“The next 10 years of your life are going to pass regardless, so why not at least try
and plant some seeds? What if it works?”
Wise words from someone who’s proven to be a great performer, on and off the stage.
